Bitter EPK
Bitter Pill is a genre-defying band from New Hampshire that fuses Americana, punk, folk, and old-time medicine show flair into raw, harmony-laced performances that are equal parts concert and theatre. Led by music and theatre maker Billie Butler and their daughter Emily, Bitter Pill is known for its hauntingly poetic sound, dark wit, and storytelling that straddles the line between the tragic and the absurd. Their songs echo with Appalachian murder ballads, twisted nursery rhymes, outlaw country, and a theatrical spirit that feels both joyfully unhinged and deeply rooted.
More than a band, Bitter Pill is a theatrical family tradition. Their original stage works include Titus Andronicus Musicus, a bloody, old-timey bluegrass take on Shakespeare’s goriest tragedy, and Children of the Grim, a macabre musical folk tale for children of all ages.
From their debut album Prepare Your Throats to Desperate Times on the NH State Line and Livin’ Ain’t Cheap, Dyin’ Ain’t Free, Bitter Pill’s sound is gritty, heartfelt, and wholly their own. Whether on stage, in the studio, or jamming on a front porch, they create art that is eerily familiar, deeply beautiful, and strangely human.
“Smart, dramatic, visual, evocative compositions that cross genres and casts shades of Tom Waits and Shane MacGowan.”
“This ain’t a slice of the floppy hat, fancy boots, folk boom throwback found at vacant pop-folk festivals ‘round the world. This is the real deal, punch you in the gut and keep you coming back looking for more goods.”
